For the last few weeks Metaverse has been at the centre of attention around the globe. The concept introduced by Meta (formerly Facebook) is a giant leap into the world of Virtual Reality. Many big companies are evaluating whether it is worth venturing into the unknown. The decision by Disney, an entertainment giant to join hands with Meta might have tipped the balance for many. Imagine being able to meet Mickey Mouse in Metaverse or becoming your favourite disney character. It could all be possible in Metaverse.
With this partnership, Disney hopes to combine the physical and the digital world as stated by the CEO Bob Chapek “Our efforts to date are merely a prologue to a time when we’ll be able to connect the physical and digital worlds even more closely”. Furthermore during his interview to CNBC he talked about his plans “My vision is to use Disney+ as the platform for the metaverse.”
The announcement does not provide any specifics of what the project will entail. So currently it is anyone’s guess what the end result of this venture will look like. It’s not the first time they have brought innovation to the entertainment industry. The company has a history of collaborating with the gaming industry to bring its character into games such as fortnite. Furthermore their movies such as “Pirates of the Caribbean” have also been released as a game. On the other hand some of their innovative ideas have not gone to plan in recent history. One such example is “Playdom” an online social network gaming that was closed down in 2016.
Metaverse being a new domain in which the business can grow, Disney will try to position itself as a market leader. The possibilities will be endless, from playing virtual games to watching disney movies in metaverse. This move by Disney can potentially revolutionise the way the entertainment industry operates.
